Created to help remove financial barriers and expand access to higher education, the BDJ40 Scholarship supports students who are highly motivated to succeed in spite of the socio-economic challenges they may face. The opportunity is open to graduating seniors from Miami-Dade and Broward County who have demonstrated strong academic performance, community involvement, and a clear vision for their future.
This year’s recipients, Breindel Marcelus and Esther Diaz, embody those values in powerful and distinct ways.

Breindel Marcelus, a dedicated student from Barbara Goleman Senior High, has developed a strong passion for psychology, youth development, and community impact. With plans to become a psychologist specializing in children and adolescents, particularly those with special needs, Breindel is already working toward that future through an initiative that blends baking and therapy. His vision is to create a café that offers therapeutic baking experiences for children, providing safe, creative spaces where young people can build confidence, develop life skills, and find emotional healing.

Esther Diaz, a hardworking student and advocate from Immaculata-la Salle High School, has pursued an extensive academic path focused on law, while also competing as a sprint triathlete and developing her voice as a writer. Shaped by personal experiences and a strong sense of purpose, Esther is driven to advocate for individuals impacted by mental health challenges and systemic injustice. Her long-term goal is to pursue a career in law, where she can continue to speak up, support others, and create meaningful change for those whose voices are often unheard.
Both recipients reflect the purpose of the BDJ40 Scholarship — recognizing students who have remained focused on their goals, overcome challenges, and are committed to building a meaningful future.
The Foundation extends a special thank you to TD Bank for their support of this year’s scholarship and their role in helping expand opportunity for students across South Florida. Their partnership continues to make programs like this possible and allows the Foundation to invest in the future of its community.
The Udonis Haslem Foundation is extremely proud to congratulate Breindel and Esther and looks forward to seeing all that they accomplish in the years ahead as they continue to pursue their goals, further their education, and create meaningful impact!
